Let us go step by step and break down how to drive traffic. I will use examples from how we would do it at DooDigital, so you get a clearer picture. You know it, we do not gate-keep, so I will explain every word we as marketers love to throw around and never define.
Step 1: SEO, how Google will find you
SEO means search engine optimization. Setting up and optimizing your blog on a weekly basis makes sure Google knows what your content is about and can show it to people searching. You do it by editing fields in your CMS: title, meta title, snippet, slug, short description, categories.
- Slug
- The last part of your blog URL. In doodigital.agency/how-to-drive-traffic, the slug is how-to-drive-traffic. In WordPress you edit it under Yoast SEO, in the Slug field.
- Snippet
- The preview Google shows. It includes your SEO title, slug and meta description. In WordPress, Yoast SEO, Search Appearance.
- Work keywords into your titles and content naturally, not by force.
- Keep your slugs short and clear.
- Write meta descriptions that actually make somebody want to click.
Step 2: social media is your megaphone
Posting a blog is step one. Sharing it everywhere is step two. That keeps your brand consistent by connecting your website and your socials, and it gives you a lot more visibility. Use the right format for each platform. Paste a short extract with the link. LinkedIn can carry a thought about the piece. Instagram can be a story with a screenshot and the link. TikTok can be a quick conversational take with the link in the comments.
- Social snippet
- What shows up when you share a blog link on Instagram or LinkedIn. In WordPress you control it in Yoast, under Social.
- Instagram: short visuals, stories, or a reel with something genuinely educational in it.
- LinkedIn: a more serious, professional voice.
- TikTok: quick hacks and teasers that point back to the blog.
Step 3: email marketing (VIP access)
Email is your private channel to readers. People who subscribe have already raised a hand, so use it to send things they will genuinely find useful. One warning: avoid unnecessary emails. They get read as spam, and people either unsubscribe or quietly stop opening.
- List
- The collection of people who signed up to hear from you.
- CTA (call to action)
- A button or link telling people what to do next. "Subscribe here", "Download now".
Nearly every CMS (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix) lets you add an email signup form through a plugin or a built in block.
- Collect emails with a freebie: a checklist, a guide, an ebook.
- Send weekly updates that carry value, not just "new post live".
Step 4: guest blogging, traffic hacking 101
Guest blogging means writing a post for another website in your industry. They publish it, they link back to you, and you get new readers plus an SEO boost. You still write in your own CMS, but when you pitch you usually send the article over as a Google Doc or a Word file and they publish it on their blog.
- Target the kind of sites your buyers already read.
- Give them fresh content that genuinely fits their readers.
- Add one or two backlinks to your own blog.
Step 5: make blogs shareable (very important)
This step gets vastly overlooked. You do want traffic, but do not fall for the famous bad practice: a post stuffed with buzzwords or clickbait, or worse, a post written entirely by ChatGPT. AI will capture the shape of the idea, but it lacks authenticity, and readers lose credibility in your brand fast. Writing something that drives traffic and says something real takes longer and costs more effort. It pays off. People share content that is clear, fun and useful.
- CTA visuals
- Graphics like infographics, charts or memes that make your post more clickable.
- Alt text
- Descriptions for images that help SEO and accessibility. You add it when you upload the image.
- Add lists, checklists or visuals that make the post easier to read.
- Use headings (H1, H2, H3) so it is easy to scan.
Step 6: paid ads, the shortcut lane
This is usually second stage for a beginner blog, but sometimes you have to put a little money behind a post to reach the right audience, especially if your concept is niche or you simply want to move faster. Fair enough. Just research the platform properly first: Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads Manager, X Ads, Meta Ads. Every one of them behaves differently and needs the right assets, from solid keyword research through to the correct ad sizes and formats. Skip that and you will burn money for nothing and end up frustrated with no traffic.
- Google Ads: target the keywords your buyers actually type.
- Instagram Ads: promote a reel that links back to the post.
Step 7: consistency equals winning
Be patient. I know that is a lot to ask, do not ask me how I know. But let me be clear: traffic does not happen in a day. It is a compound interest kind of thing, so the more you put into quality content, the better it gets.
- Post weekly.
- Update old blogs with fresh information.
- Repurpose blog content into email and social.
